Arizona Traffic Violation Points

When an Arizona driver commits a traffic offense, they are often provided a ticket, fines, and possibly jail time depending on the severity of the violation. Along with these punishments, they are also assessed points that line up with their offense. As you can see in the table to the left, points are assessed based on the violation. Eight points are given to those who are convicted of DUI and Reckless Driving, three points to those who were caught speeding, and so on.

If one receives eight or more points during a 12-month period, they may be subjected to mandatory Traffic Survival School (TSS), and a potential year-long license suspension. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) provides a more in-depth look at this point assessment, and the violations that are associated with them.

The Difference Between a License Suspension, Cancellation, and Revocation

According to the Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles, some traffic violations warrant an individual's license to be suspended, revoked, or even canceled.

License Suspension: If a person gets their license suspended, they are temporarily restricted from driving their motor vehicle. This suspension often only occurs until the individuals take the steps to gain their license back, and the associated fees are paid, however, there are instances that may warrant a longer suspension.

License Revocation: According to the DMV site, a license revocation takes away a person's driving privileges for a set amount of time. Once the individual serves their revocation, they must again apply for their license, meeting all requirements and paying all fines. These requirements may include retaking the driving test, and vision test.

License Cancellation: Though it is quite uncommon, a license can be completely taken away from someone. However, this course of action is usually only taken by the MVD if they deem an individual unsafe for the roads. This can be due to issues such as a medical condition.
